What programs does RHI support?

In order to meet our Strategic Objectives, RHI developed a framework that focuses our work, determines future activities and ultimately, contributes toward our vision of a world without paralysis after spinal cord injury. Within this framework, four priorities have been identified against which we measure our progress:

1. Engaging Consumers

RHI's Consumer Program is an enabling strategy for all programs and aims to effectively and meaningfully engage people with lived experience in research through (see Roadmap):

- Connecting researchers who want to meaningfully and respectfully engage people with lived experience in their research as participants or partners in research
- Championing integrated Knowledge Translation (iKT) and applying the principles of iKT by involving knowledge users including people with lived experience in projects
- Leveraging existing external capacity building opportunities (webinars, workshops, online platforms) to enhance knowledge and skills of researchers in meaningful engagement of people with lived experience
- Supporting opportunities to increase knowledge and awareness of evidence-informed SCI resources among people with lived experience to improve self-management and informed decision-making

2. Accelerating research towards a cure

RHI's Cure Program supports work leading to better diagnosis of, and promising treatments for SCI. Areas of focus for RHI's Cure Program for 2019 to 2022 include the following (see Roadmap):

- Biomarkers to assess impairment
  - Developing, applying and validating SCI biomarkers (including neurochemical biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid and blood, the microbiome and imaging)
- Neuro-protective and neuro-restorative therapies
  - Developing hemodynamic management protocols for acute SCI management
  - Developing and evaluating rehabilitation strategies (e.g. high intensity therapy or activity-based therapy) and neuro-restorative technologies (e.g. spinal stimulation, functional electrical stimulation) as well as relevant outcome measures/data sets
  - Developing evidence-informed resources to implement activity-based therapy and existing neuro-restorative technologies

3. Improving SCI care across Canada

RHI's Care Program aims to achieve evidence-informed equitable and optimal care across the SCI continuum. Areas of focus for RHI's Care Program for 2019 to 2022 include the following (see Roadmap):

- Describing and understanding the SCI Population
  - Updating SCI epidemiology and health care costs in Canada
- SCI care and long-term health, wellness and participation
  - Assessing and selecting clinical guidelines and indicators for implementation
  - Supporting care and self-management (e.g. physical activity) by creating evidence-informed resources for both clinicians and people with lived experience across the SCI continuum
  - Enhancing and refining the SCI standards and Qmentum Accreditation Program with key partners
  - Supporting the development of a National SCI Care, Health and Wellness Strategy with partners and stakeholders to generate consensus on the priorities and an action plan
  - Supporting the co-creation and implementation of regionally relevant and innovative solutions
- Data, informatics and evaluation
  - Supporting evidence-informed decision-making policies and implementation of best practices through data platforms (e.g. Rick Hansen SCI Registry)
  - Validating outcome measures/data sets and developing reports (static and interactive) and other clinical tools (e.g. ISNCSCI Algorithm)
  - Incorporating advanced analytical methods (e.g. machine learning, artificial intelligence) with SCI data (collection, linking, analysis, reporting)
  - Evaluating impact and return on investment (value/health economics)

4. Increasing the development and commercialization of innovations

RHI's Commercialization Program aims to accelerate the research to implementation continuum by: (see Roadmap)

- Supporting companies to identify their target market, generate scenarios, and evaluate the feasibility of projects through proficiency in data analytics, model simulation, clinical studies and project managemen
- Increasing the efficiency by utilizing RHI's pan-Canadian and international networks
- Maximizing market reach through RHI's expertise in knowledge translation and implementation of best practices
- Connecting innovators with funding sources

Project Title: Neil Squire Society Computer Comfort Program

Purpose: The Grant is to be used by the Grant Recipient exclusively to support the Computer Comfort program, operated by the Neil Squire Society, to implement the Solutions Model in BC and promote active living among BC residents with spinal cord Injuries. This program is a basic computer familiarization program offered to clients, free of charge -- designed for people who have mobility impairments (including SCI), and who have a desire to learn to use a computer to achieve individual goals which often include increased community participation, education, and employment. The Computer Comfort program provides one-on-one instruction, recommendations for adaptive equipment, and refurbished equipment to be used in the client's home.

Project Title: Program Support for BC Wheelchair Sports Association (BCWSA)

Purpose: The Grant is to be used by the Grant Recipient exclusively to support BCWSA programs. BCWSA is focused on the following goals, with the ultimate outcome being increased participation of individuals with SCI in sport and recreation in the province of BC: To enhance retention strategies; To deliver multi-level programming based on the Long-Term Athlete Development model; To engage communities; To provide regional development initiatives; To engage in leadership development of officials, classifiers, volunteers and administrators; To offer an equipment program; To develop and enhance partnerships to achieve BCWSA goals; To increase awareness strategies; To engage athletes as role models. Through strategic engagement, innovative communication, and collaboration, this funding opportunity will assist BCWSA in accelerating its ability to achieve these goals. The primary focus for the use of these funds will be to build capacity in a variety of programs and services focusing on participation, enhanced regional communication strategies and leadership development.

The foundation pursues three primary approaches to realize this mission: Promote and engage people in activities that encourage a healthy, active lifestyle, develop selfconfidence, reduce isolation and increase their participation in the life of the community by delivering programs covering a variety of areas of interest; Provide custom assistive devices that help to overcome physical obstacles, reduce health complications, create greater independence and enable people to undertake activities that might not otherwise be possible; Engage community partners to help people connect with the programs and services available to them and pursue their personal goals for employment, volunteerism and community involvement; Funds will be used to support 6 charities associated with SSDF - Tetra Society, Disabled Sailing Association of BC, BC Mobility Opportunities Society, Vancouver Adapted Music Society, Disabled Independent Gardeners Association, and ConecTra Society.

Project Title: Canada Research Chair in Rehabilitation Engineering Design

Purpose: The Grant is to be used by the Grant Recipient, exclusively to enhance collaboration and community services offered by the 5 Network members: SCI-BC, Neil Squire Society, Sam Sullivan Disability Foundation, BC Wheelchair Basketball Society, and BC Wheelchair Sports Association. In particular, funding will be used to (1) increase awareness of the BC SCI Community Services Network, (2) develop program capacity to increase the ability of CSN members to engage and serve BC's population of people with SCI, and (3) add to the sustainability of CSN and each of its member organizations.

Project Title: National Sexual and Reproductive Health Meeting

Purpose: The Grant is to be used by the Grant Recipient exclusively to bring together participants (experts identified through the RHI Rehabilitation Evironmental Scan and within the reproductive health and SCI practice community) to come to Vancouver for a one day facilitated meeting. The overarching goal of this meeting is to establish priorities in the areas of knowledge generation, clinical application and policy change. Bringing together stakeholders from the community, clinical, and research areas will permit a comprehensive, national overview of the current situation in sexual and reproductive care for persons with SCI, to identify existing resources, and where gaps may exist.
