Q&A with Dr. Dorothy Barthélemy

Dr. Dorothy Barthélemy, a leading researcher in spinal cord injury (SCI), is fascinated by why some people with SCI regain their ability to balance and walk over time – and others do not. We sat down with Dr. Barthélemy and asked her some questions about her clinical and laboratory SCI research.

"An analysis of ideal and actual time to surgery after traumatic spinal cord injury in Canada" and "Evidence-based scientific exercise guidelines for adults with spinal cord injury: an update and a new guideline" were among the most cited, read and shared publications in 2017 and 2018.

Other News

• RHI hosted an Activity Based Therapy (ABT) Summit in Toronto on March 1-2 that brought together a diverse group of 38 stakeholders. The goal of the Summit was to synthesize current knowledge of ABT and create a Canadian ABT Strategy for SCI and develop a 5 year action plan of priorities needed to move this field forward.
   

• In February, RHI supported a Café Scientifique at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre in conjunction with the 5th International Autonomic Symposium. The event was held in partnership with ICORD and SCI-BC and brought together people with SCI, their families and supporters, researchers and clinicians to exchange knowledge about women’s health and develop networks for partnering on potential projects. This event was videocast and can be viewed on SCI-BC’s Facebook page.

• In February, RHI was invited to attend the National Institutes of Health's SCI 2020: Launching a Decade for Disruption in Spinal Cord Injury Research conference, held in Bethesda, MD. The goal of the conference was to initiate discussion across the SCI research community to launch a new decade of research that disrupts traditional barriers and brings about collaborative efforts to address the key research questions in spinal cord injury research

• In February, CliniQuick officially launched at the Interdisciplinary Spasticity Management Service at GF Strong. The mobile app, developed by RHI’s software and development team, is designed to increase the speed and effectiveness of knowledge translation by providing measures and metrics to validate practice improvements. This app was developed through close collaboration with Dr. Patricia Mills and the spasticity clinic at GF Strong.
